Cockroach sex

They've been around for the past million years , outlasting the dinosaurs and teaming up with evolution to outsmart our attempts to get rid of them. Now, Japanese researchers at Hokkaido University have revealed yet another reason why we have been unable to put a dent in their populations: female solidarity. Cockroaches, along with termites, snakes and sharks , have long been known to be capable of "virgin birth" or parthenogenesis , a form of asexual reproduction that occurs without fertilization. What is less known are the factors that trigger this process.

As generations of pest controllers and embattled homeowners know only too well, cockroaches are supposedly hardy enough to survive anything - even a nuclear war. Now, however, scientists are exploiting the weakness that could consign the insects to oblivion: their rampant sex drive. After a quest of more than a decade, they have discovered how to create an artificial version of the sexual pheromone produced by willing female German cockroaches — a scent so irresistible that even males close to death by starvation will pass up a lump of meat when they catch a whiff. By spraying the scent on cockroach traps, a fatal attraction can be set up. What Dr Coby Schal, an American entomologist who first became obsessed with cockroaches almost 30 years ago, described as "the ultimate eureka moment" came recently at a pig farm. Male cockroaches began scuttling towards the synthetic pheromone, proving it was indistinguishable from the real thing. Just one female German cockroach — the most common variety of the pest found in Britain — can, in ideal conditions, trigger a breeding cycle resulting in a million new cockroaches within a year.

Sexy ‘perfume’ lures cockroaches to their doom

Common female cockroaches can reproduce for years without needing a mate, producing dozens of generations of all-female descendants, a team of scientists has found. Parthenogenesis is a form of asexual reproduction, allowing young insects to spawn from unfertilised eggs. In the case of the American cockroach, the largest roach commonly found across the globe, parthenogenesis was previously thought to be an option of last resort. Though that number declined to around , the entomologists believe their research goes some way toward explaining how roaches can endure in hostile conditions. There are 46, species of cockroach across the globe, including eight centimetre long specimens found in Australia and even larger varieties in the caves of Central and South America.

In this system, there is only one sex chromosome, referred to as X. Males only have one X chromosome X0 , while females have two XX. The zero sometimes, the letter O signifies the lack of a second X. Its sperm normally contain either one X chromosome or no sex chromosomes at all.
